Selecting floral themes can be one of the most exciting parts of planning a wedding. In addition to choosing flowers that will perfectly highlight your special day visually, it’s wise to consider logistical elements such as availability and durability. As you plan the flowers for your destination wedding be sure to ask for your wedding coordinator’s input since they’ll have valuable insight into the flower market at your destination and maybe even be able to suggest some local specialties you hadn’t thought of.
We at Plush Catering & Events asked one of our local floral providers to give us a rundown on flowers in Puerto Vallarta. Here’s what we learned:
Plush: What flowers are locally available?
Florist: “We can get almost any flower. We grow tropical flowers in this area, and anything that’s not grown here is available from other areas of Mexico – really you can pick any flower you like. Roses are moderately priced, and dendrobium orchids, Calalilies and Gladiolus are all quite popular with brides. Also Birds of Paradise and Alpinia Purpura (Red Ginger) are available locally and easily.”
Plush: What flowers do you recommend for lasting in the sun?
Florist: “The sun in Puerto Vallarta is very strong and we do not recommend placing flowers in the direct sun – but again, tropical flowers last longer. Also, we handle and place the flowers in the location just in time so they are perfect for the moment needed…”
Plush: What flowers do you recommend for a tropical wedding on a budget?
Florist: “It all depends in what you need. You can start with the basics for $60 (USD) or you can customize with ceremony arrangements, centerpieces, brides-maids bouquets etc. It’s all priced differently and we custom design each wedding for the couple.”
Plush: What is a unique flower that could set the wedding apart, and also holds up well during the ceremony?
Florist: “Orchids and tropicals: birds of paradise, Alpinia Purpura (Red Ginger), and Anthurium ( Flamingo flower).”
